The North Sea Lake

Brenda Unwin and Sarah Caputo

Full English text below

----------
The North Sea is often perceived as a great divide, divorcing the British Isles from continental Europe. In cultural terms, however, it has always acted more as a lake, supporting communities around its fringes which have frequently had much in common. ...material culture was often more remarkable for its similarity across distance than for its diversity.’
- B. Ayers, Cities, Cogs and Commerce, Archaeological approaches to the material culture of the North Sea World. Senior Research Fellow, University of East Anglia, UK
Brenda Unwin (painter) and Sarah Caputo (sculptor) are professional artists from the UK, who have both exhibited nationally and internationally. The current pandemic, BREXIT, the influx of asylum seekers into Europe generally and the rise of extremists have all contributed to forming barriers to prevent exchange between peoples. They work to break down cultural, social, economic and historic barriers and celebrate the benefits of cross-cultural exchange. Over the last 5 years they have been collaborating on projects investigating shared cultural, social, intellectual, ideological connections between East Anglia and Denmark both historically and in contemporary society.
The exhibition will include screenprinted textiles, ceramics, sculptures, drawings and paintings referencing artefacts from Moesgaard Museum, Aarhus alongside, museums in Copenhagen, Viborg, Norwich and East Anglia. Its ethos can be seen as an analogy for the celebration of the sharing of ideas with people of all nations, races, ages and gender. The work is accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
